Drew Barrymore Hosted an Ever After Reunion, Costumes and All

For the 25th anniversary of beloved teen-period-drama-romance-fairy-tale-without-magic Ever After, Drew Barrymore invited her costars Melanie Lynskey and Megan Dodds to reminisce about the shoot on her talk show…in costume, obviously.

In the film, based on the story of Cinderella, Barrymore played the kind and hardworking Danielle, while Lynskey and Dodds were her “evil stepsisters.” Really, though, only Dodds's character, Marguerite, is evil, taking after their haughty mother, Romilla (Anjelica Houston). Jacqueline, played by Lynskey, is a homie stuck in a bad family.

Dodds and Lynskey lived together while shooting the film in France, and recalled crashing their car and using broken French to ask for help. Feeling groovy, they also took topless photos in a cornfield. “Lucy Liu also took nude photos of me on Charlie's Angels,” said Barrymore. “I guess it's just what us girls do.”

The three women got a special surprise when Dougray Scott, who played Prince Henry, Zoomed in from out of town. Ever the royal, he dutifully wore a costume too. Drew Barrymore revealed a little behind-the-scenes movie magic, saying that as strong as a person she is “inside,” she couldn't carry Scott on her back for the pivotal scene in which Danielle—flipping the prince-rescues-princess convention on its head—rescues Henry. It's probably too much to hope that translucent wings come into fashion, but can we start wearing those little…forehead necklaces with the jewels? So much cooler than a tiara, in my opinion.

Lynskey, who is having a moment with roles on Yellowjackets and The Last of Us, recently sat down with Glamour to chat about how she may come across as meek, but on the inside she's anything but. “I am quite shy sometimes,” she said. “I do have some social anxiety. I am soft-spoken. But I’m quite ferocious. I think to be labeled as someone who is a pushover has been the hardest thing to get out of in terms of my personal and professional life.” Honestly? Sounds a lot like Jacqueline.
